How it works

The checker scores formality using formal connectors, contractions, informal words and first person, the same signals readers pick up on.

Confidence and hedging come from words like "clearly" or "will" versus "might" or "perhaps". A little hedging is healthy in academic writing; too much sounds unsure.

Paragraphs whose formality jumps sharply from the previous one are flagged as tone shifts.

Questions

What tone should an essay have?

Usually formal and measured: few contractions, no slang, and confident claims backed by evidence, with hedging where the evidence is uncertain.

Is this an AI tone detector?

No AI is involved. It is a transparent word and pattern based check, so you can see exactly why each score is what it is.

Why does my text show as both confident and hedging?

Most writing mixes both. The scores are independent so you can balance them.
