How to Change Your Writing Style to Bypass AI Checkers Manually
The ten edits you can make by hand to lower any AI-detection score, based on how the classifiers actually score text.
Every AI detector scores on the same handful of features. If you understand them, you can rewrite by hand and get almost any draft under the threshold. Here are the ten edits that do the heavy lifting, ranked by how much they move the score.
1. Vary sentence length dramatically
Burstiness is the single biggest signal. Follow a 30-word sentence with a 6-word one. Detectors reward variance. Uniform is a tell.
2. Kill the em-dash
GPT loves the em-dash. Replace most of them with commas or full stops. Keep two or three per essay for rhythm — no more.
3. Cut the connector openers
"Moreover", "furthermore", "additionally". These at the start of a sentence are the number one lexical tell. Delete them or rewrite the sentence to make the connection implicit.
4. Turn nominalizations into verbs
"Make a decision" → "decide". "Provide an explanation of" → "explain". "Has an impact on" → "shapes". Verbs are shorter and less predictable.
5. Delete "there is" and "there are" openers
"There are many factors that influence X" → "Many factors influence X". Shorter, punchier, less predictable.
6. Replace GPT's favorite vocabulary
Utilize → use. Leverage → use. Robust → solid. Meticulous → careful. Delve → look at. The Google Ngram data on these words shows exactly when GPT trained on them.
7. Break up hedging phrases
"It is important to note that" → just say it. "One might argue that" → "you could say". Cut the throat-clearing.
8. Reorder sentence openers
"X because Y" → "Because Y, X". Reordering the natural clause order raises perplexity without changing meaning.
9. Kill the "In conclusion" closer
Detectors flag closing paragraphs that start with a summarizer. Just end with your actual conclusion — no signposting needed.
10. Read it out loud
The final test. If it sounds like a person talking, it will read like a person on the page. If it sounds like a corporate blog post, it will score high.
If you would rather automate these edits, Bypassify runs all ten of them (plus more) in about eight seconds. But knowing them by hand is a skill you keep forever.
