Nobody puts it in the published rubric, but the workflow is real — often GPTZero, sometimes Turnitin, sometimes Copyleaks — and a high score can pull an otherwise-strong application into the "second look" pile.
Why detectors misfire hardest on personal statements
Personal statements are short (500-1000 words), highly polished (drafted six times), and written in a formal register. Every one of those features raises detector scores on human-written text. This is the worst combination of inputs a classifier can see.
What committees actually do with a flag
They rarely reject on the flag alone. What happens more often is quiet — the essay gets a second reader whose priors are now against you, or your interview shifts to test the essay's authenticity ("tell me more about the moment in paragraph three"). Neither is appealable because neither was ever announced.
How to write a statement detectors won't flag
Three things. First, one specific concrete detail per paragraph — a place, a name, a number. Detectors reward specificity because models under-generate it. Second, at least one deliberately short sentence per paragraph (five to seven words). Third, one first-person moment of doubt or self-correction — models rarely generate these organically.
If you used AI to draft
Use a humanizer with citation-preservation off (there are no citations to protect) and strength set to aggressive. Then read the output out loud twice, edit any sentence that sounds robotic, and add the three human signals above. This is the highest-stakes writing most students do; it's worth two extra editing passes.
